On Nov. 5, the entire seventh grade at Maury River Middle School pursued a morning of outdoor service-learning focusing on their namesake river. Having read a novel about the value of clean water in English class, the students toured the water treatment facility, learning about the local drinking water purification system. They also traveled to Jordans Point Park, working as young scientists to determine the ecological health of the Maury using chemical and biological tests. As an extension of their civics study, the 170 students also helped beautify the park by planting 3,062 crocus bulbs near the Park’s Gold Star Memorial. Supporting the effort in addition to MRMS teachers were Boxerwood educators and volunteers, including members from two local garden clubs. According to organizers, the students were excited to imagine a carpet of blooms for the community early next spring.
