W&L Men, Warr Win Regional CC Titles
The Washington and Lee University men’s won the NCAA Division III South Regional men’s championship Saturday at Green Hill Park in Salem to earn an automatic bid to the national championships. It was the second regional title in program history and the first since 1995.
With five runners in the top 15, the Generals scored 39 points to defeat runner-up Lynchburg (57). Southern Virginia University finished 15th with 436 points.
Junior Robert Cooper led W&L, placing third of 170 harriers, completing the 8-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 33.3 seconds. W&L senior Keaton Rush finished fourth in 24:34.8, and sophomore teammate Sam Daunt placed fifth in 24:35.5. Also racing for the Generals were sophomore William Dunaway (12th, 24:52.7), junior Thomas Franklin (15th, 25:11.8), sophomore Jackson Kodenski (21st, 25:29) and sophomore Raja Mehendale (49th, 26:31.2). Leading SVU was freshman Taylor Weiland (43rd, 26:24.8).
Emory won the women’s race with 42 points, while W&L (67) placed second of 26 teams, and Rhodes (112) finished third. Rounding out the top five were Catholic (175) and Lynchburg (182), while SVU (192) placed sixth.
W&L junior Olivia Warr won the women’s race to become the first W&L woman to repeat as the regional champion, finishing the 6K course in 21:00.7. Junior teammate Lydia Harvey placed second of 175 harriers in 21:36.4, and Emory’s Madison Tiaffay finished third in 21:41.3. Leading SVU and placing fourth was junior Bayleigh Redd-Armstrong in a personal-record time of 21:47.8, becoming the first SVU woman in program history to qualify for the national championship meet.
Other W&L women racing were junior Reese Brown (18th, 22:40.3), freshman Josie Engle (19th, 22:40.8), senior Eve Spencer (27th, 23:04.6) and freshmen Maddy Morgan (29th, 23:08.4) and Adelaide Ellis (34th, 23:20.8).
Other SVU women running were freshman Kaylee Horner (20th, 22:41.8), juniors Sasha Braddy (21st, 22:46.5) and Kenia Reynolds (60th, 24:19.2), freshman Kyra Lee (93rd, 25:32.5), senior Emmalee Gabrylczyk (95th, 25:36.9) and freshman Samantha Olsen (128th, 26:52.7).
Redd-Armstrong, Warr and the W&L men will compete in the Division III Championships on Saturday at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg, S.C. The W&L women were waiting to see if they would earn a team bid. The men’s race is scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by the women’s race at 11. W&L Women’s Soccer Advances To Sweet 16
The W&L women’s soccer team won its first two games in the NCAA Division III tournament to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year.
The No. 9 Generals (18-22) defeated Marymount University 3-0 in the first round on Friday before earning a 2-0 win over No. 18 Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday. Both games were in Lexington.
Against Marymount (11-92), W&L got a goal each from Sarah Zimmerman, Helen Otteni and Maren Brown.
In Sunday’s game, Zimmerman and Otteni each scored once to help the Generals defeat Carnegie Mellon (10-5-5). W&L sophomore goalkeeper Kate McEnroe made three saves to record her eighth shutout of the season.

W&L Netters Win ODAC Title
The W&L women’s volleyball team earned a 3-1 road win over Bridgewater College to claim its third consecutive Old Dominion Athletic championship on Saturday.
Grace Mitchener led fourthseeded W&L (23-9 overall, 8-3 ODAC) with 17 kills, 23 digs and four blocks in the 25-22, 1925, 25-16, 25-17 win over thirdseeded Bridgewater (21-8, 8-3). Also stepping up for the Generals were Sienna Nicholson with 41 assists and Riley Debec with 12 kills.
Prior to the championship match, the Generals had beaten Shenandoah University 3-0 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday of last week in Lexington before upsetting top seed Virginia Wesleyan University 3-2 on Thursday in Virginia Beach.

SVU Volleyball Wins USA South Title
The SVU women’s volleyball team won its second consecutive USA South Athletic Conference title by earning a 3-0 win at top seed Greensboro on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.
Aubrey Packer had 14 kills to lead the second-seeded Knights (23-8 overall, 14-4 USA South) to a 28-26, 25-22, 25-21 victory over the Pride (28-3, 18-0). Other leaders for SVU were Emma Broadbent with 13 kills, Anne Downs with 11 kills, Summer Hahn with six blocks, Talia Quinn with 24 assists and Gracie Fulton with 19 digs and two aces.
Prior to the championship match, the Knights had earned two conference tournament home wins, defeating William Peace 3-0 in the first round on Tuesday of last week before knocking out Salem College 3-0 in the second round.

W&L Men’s Soccer Falls In NCAA
The W&L men’s soccer team concluded its season with a 1-0 loss to Denison University in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday in Carlisle, Pa.
The lone goal of the game came with 3:55 left on the clock, when Denison’s Phil Koutsaftis dribbled into the box on the left side and hit a quick shot through traffic and into the right side of the net. Denison (15-3-3) would end its season with a 2-0 loss to Dickinson College (15-0-7) in the second round on Sunday.
The Generals, under the direction of second-year head coach Lumumba Shabazz wrapped up their season at 115-5 overall. In the ODAC, W&L went 7-1-1, losing to Lynchburg 2-1 in the ODAC championship game.
