Bird Club Plans River Walk Stroll

Rockbridge Bird Club has added a new series of local outings to its birding docket.

In addition to Second Saturday walks at Boxerwood, Fourth Friday strolls are now being scheduled at other nearby locations. This month’s outing is along the Buena Vista River Walk on Oct. 24. Non-members and inexperienced birders are welcome to participate.

Birders will meet at 8 a.m. at the Glen Maury Park entrance, then follow the River Walk, which runs atop the flood wall, birding downstream along the river, edging trees and meadow, perhaps reaching the higher flood wall for good river views.

“This will be a ‘we’ll see what we can see’ kind of outing,” says Laura Neale, the walk organizer. “It may be a bit early for ducks, but we will see birds.”

Birders should bring binoculars and wear sturdy shoes. In the event of rain, the walk will be canceled.
