For the first time in program history, the Rockbridge County High School competition cheerleading team will play host for the district competition tonight, Wednesday, when the Wildcats compete against other Shenandoah District teams. The competition will start at 6:30 p.m., with seven teams performing. Admission is $7.
The top four teams from Class 3 will advance to the Region 3C competition, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, at noon at Wilson Memorial High School in Fishersville. Because there are only three Class 3 teams competing, all of them will advance.
The Wildcats, under the direction of head coach Shannon Bryan and assistant coach Sarah Parnell, are scheduled to perform last, at 7:30 p.m. The night will start with a performance by Riverheads, followed by Stuarts Draft, Waynesboro, Buffalo Gap, Fort Defiance, Staunton and RC. Each team’s routine is required to last at least two minutes and 30 seconds and no more than three minutes, with music for no more than one minute and 45 seconds.
Last year, when they were in the Valley District, the Wildcats placed third in the district competition before winning the Region 3C competition, their first-ever regional title in program history. In their first state competition in 25 years, the Wildcats placed eighth at the Class 3 state competition. RC graduated seven seniors from last year’s team, including four all-state cheerleaders.
After the Wildcats perform, they’ll honor their five seniors at 7:45 p.m. The seniors are Lillian Ballard, Gabriella Brown, Riley McDaniel, Emma Mines and Willow Rogers.
A story and photos from the district competition will be in next week’s newspaper.
