Wildcats Tie For Second At Greenbrier

Playing at the prestigious golf course at The Greenbrier, the Rockbridge County High School golf team tied for second place of four teams on Monday of last week in White Sulfur Springs, W.Va.

On a course that has hosted many professional golf tournaments, the Wildcats shot a 168 in the nine-hole match to tie Greenbrier East (W.Va.). Princeton (W.Va.) was the winning team, with a score of 158. RC’s Shenandoah District rival Alleghany finished fourth with a 186. The match was a late addition to the Wildcats’ schedule.

Princeton’s Cart Hinkle was the medalist, firing a one-under-par 34. Leading the Wildcats was sophomore Davis Welsh, shooting a 40. Senior Dean Fafatas posted a 41 for RC’s second score, and senior teammate Harrison Tanner carded a 43.

RC junior Finbar Looney and sophomore Joe Vargas both shot 44 to tie for the Wildcats’ fourth score. Also competing for the Wildcats was sophomore Parker Flint, firing a 45.

Reviewing the day, RC head coach Garret Huffman said, “It was a beautiful day for golf at an awesome course against some tough competition. What a great experience it was to play at The Greenbrier!”

The Wildcats were scheduled to take on Alleghany at Cliff View Golf Club yesterday (Tuesday, Sept. 2) in Covington and will travel for an 18-hole match against their Shenandoah District rivals next Monday at 9 a.m. at Gypsy Hill Golf Club, located in Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton. They’ll then play a nine-hole nondistrict match on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Lake Monticello Golf Course in Palmyra, with Fluvanna County playing host.
