Glasgow Purchasing Church Property

The former Glasgow Presbyterian Church property is being purchased by Glasgow Town Council.

At Town Council’s Aug. 12 meeting, Town Manager Allyson Finchum announced that the process to purchase the property is underway. The property connects to property the town purchased earlier. Tentative plans are to start holding Council meetings there and renting the buildings to groups for birthday parties, weddings and other special events, thus becoming a source of revenue. She said she hopes the whole complex will become a town square. She has talked with representatives of the Garden Club about making the area look attractive.

Jeff Rankin, head of the town’s water and sewer department, spoke to Council concerning his upcoming retirement after 32 years with the town. His retirement will be effective Sept. 30. He thanked Council for the opportunity to serve the town, and reflected upon those with whom he had worked with over the years and the challenges he faced with changing state regulations. He noted he has about 500 hours of unused sick time and asked Council to consider paying him for that.

Carolyn Bradley, farmers market manager, thanked Council for the opportunity of overseeing the market and the support the town gave her the past five-plus years. She noted the market was closing for the season Aug. 22. She said several of her long standing, established vendors were hit with serious health issues this season and were unable to be part of the market, and others had left to support other markets that opened in the area. She said she had to watch how much she was being compensated, trying to stay under $600.

In other business, Finchum said someone had inquired about moving a furniture making/sawmill business into the former Dollar General Store. After some discussion with pros and cons, Council decided she should look further into this and report back with recommendations.

Openings for a police officer and wastewater plant operator have been posted.

Wells Construction continues their water line project, which is projected to be completed in October.

There will be public hearings in September or October on town codes concerning dogs running at large. Some citizens have complained about this problem.

The public meeting was adjourned and Council went into executive session to discuss other issues.
