For the second week in a row, the Rockbridge County High School golf team took first place in a Shenandoah District match, this time at The Omni Homestead Resort on Monday of last week in Hot Springs.
Playing on the The Homestead’s Old Course, the Wildcats shot a 333 to remain undefeated in the district, while Wilson Memorial placed second of nine teams with a 340. RC head coach Garret Huffman said it was “another great day on the course” for the Wildcats.
Waynesboro (342) finished third, Fort Defiance (346) fourth, and Staunton (347) fifth. Rounding out the standings were Alleghany (365), Riverheads (397), Stuarts Draft (403) and Buffalo Gap (408).
The medalist was WM’s Jaxson Devereux, firing a 76 on the hilly 18-hole, par-72 course. Senior Harrison Tanner led RC, shooting a 78 to place second. RC’s second scorer was sophomore Davis Welsh, who tied for fifth place with an 82. The highlight for Welsh was nearly making a hole in one on the par-3 hole No. 2.
Senior Dean Fafatas turned in RC’s third score by firing an 86, while sophomore Joe Vargas completed RC’s team scoring by carding an 87. Also competing for the Wildcats were sophomore Parker Flint, posting 90, and junior Finbar Looney, shooting a 92.
Pleased by his team’s progress, Huffman said he was “super proud of this group and the hard work that everyone is putting in each and every day.”
Today, Wednesday, the Wildcats will face former district rival Turner Ashby in a nine-hole match at Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg, starting at 4:15 p.m. The Wildcats will then have two weeks without competition before returning to Shenandoah District action with an 18-hole match Monday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. at Gypsy Hill Golf Club in Staunton.
