The Rockbridge Regional Library Youth Literacy Program is seeking new tutors to help elementary students in the Rockbridge County Public Schools and at Waddell with reading through one-on-one tutoring.
In the 2024-25 school year, 56 YLP tutors provided over 800 sessions of tutoring. Originating in 1992, the tutoring program is a longstanding service provided by the regional library. Parents and teachers have reported seeing children in the program improve significantly in reading and in self-confidence.
Tutors commit to helping a student once a week during the school year. No experience is needed, but tutors do need to be at least 18 years of age. Tutors currently in the program come from a variety of employment and educational backgrounds. After completing an initial training session, tutors begin working with a mentor who assists them during their first year of tutoring. The next training session is scheduled for early September.
Anyone interested in becoming a YLP tutor should contact the coordinator, Lenna Ojure, at [email protected] or (540) 463-4324, extension 105.
