RCSB Extends Thompson’s Contract

At its June meeting, the Rockbridge County School Board voted to approve a new four-year contract for Superintendent Phillip Thompson, extending his leadership through 2029.

Thompson, who is beginning his ninth year in the role, requested to renegotiate the contract ahead of schedule in order to shift from the standard three-year term to a fouryear agreement. The Board unanimously supported the proposal.

Board Chair Kathy Burant praised Thompson’s tenure, expressing confidence in his continued leadership and describing the board as “excited” to have him for another four years. The decision was met with a round of applause from those in attendance.

In a statement to The News-Gazette, Thompson said he was “honored and grateful” for the board’s trust.

“Rockbridge County Public Schools is a special place — not only because of the incredible students, staff, and families we serve, but also because it’s where I grew up and attended school,” he said. “As I begin my ninth year as superintendent, I remain deeply committed to ensuring that every student who enters our classrooms does so with promise — and leaves with multiple possibilities. It’s a privilege to give back to the community that shaped me, and I look forward to the important work ahead.”
