Youth Finalist In NWF Contest

Eight-year-old Iris Warner has been named a national semi-finalist in the 2025 Jr. Ranger Contest, a program celebrating children who demonstrate creativity, dedication and passion for conservation and environmental stewardship.

Through her involvement in the Jr. Ranger contest, she is raising awareness for the National Wildlife Federation and encouraging other children and families to connect with and care for the natural world.

Born into a military family, Iris has lived in several states, gaining a firsthand appreciation for the diverse ecosystems across the U.S. — from coastal shores to mountain trails. She currently resides in Jacksonville, Fla., where her father, Joshua Warner, serves in the U.S. Navy.

Iris’s mother, Kara Gordon Warner, is a Buena Vista native and graduate of Parry McCluer High School. She owns Gardens of Midgard, a rare plant business that has helped nurture Iris’s understanding of plant life and its impact on the environment. Kara is also a citizen of the Monacan Indian Nation, a heritage that plays a meaningful role in the family’s connection to the land and their respect for the environment.

“Iris has always had a natural bond with animals and the outdoors,” said Kara Warner. “No matter where we’re stationed, she finds ways to explore, learn, and help take care of the world around her.”

Whether picking up litter, visiting nature preserves, or sharing tips with other kids on how to protect wildlife, Iris is always finding ways to make a difference. She is especially passionate about endangered species and hopes to become a wildlife biologist when she grows up.

“Nature is our home, and we have to take care of it,” Iris said.

Now, Iris is asking for public support to help her win the Jr. Ranger title. Residents can vote for her once per day or donate to the National Wildlife Federation on her behalf. Every vote not only brings Iris one step closer to winning the Jr. Ranger title, but also supports ongoing efforts to protect wildlife and inspire the next generation of conservationists.
