May 1, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: I am stunned, confused, and distressed. I have lived in, cared about, and been an engaged citizen of this country for 80 years. I have been proud that my country is based on democratic principles, is committed to government of, for, and by the people and has been allied with and a strong supporter of democratic countries throughout the world.
This includes Ukraine, a democracy invaded by Russia, which is led by a brutal, repressive dictator, with devastating results including the deaths of many civilians and massive destruction of their cities and infrastructure.
But in a matter of weeks we have changed sides. W e cut off military aid and stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, trying to compel them into making major negotiating concessions. We demanded that Ukraine give us ownership of 50% of their precious metals to repay us for the support we have already provided. No major concessions were demanded of Russia. We voted with Russia, North Korea and Iran against a UN resolution condemning Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
The president has questioned the value of NATO and led its members, our most steadfast allies for decades, to doubt that we would come to their aid if they are attacked. They are now planning for how to continue their support for Ukraine without our involvement.
It is critical to be able to rely on and trust those who support and fight with you. Are we really choosing Russia, North Korea and Iran over our NATO allies who have stood with and fought beside us for so long.
This is not only stupid it is dangerous. Our nation is strongest when it stands with those who share our democratic values, not with countries led by autocratic dictators who seek to undermine the world order. BILL BLATTER Rockbridge County
