The Rockbridge County High School baseball team lost a pair of Valley District road games last week, falling to Broadway 8-5 last Tuesday before losing to Spotswood 4-0 on Friday.
The Wildcats (4-7 overall, 2-5 district) fell behind early against Broadway (12-2, 6-2), which took a 4-0 lead in the first inning when Jackson Plogger hit a grand slam.
RC cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the second when Brady Majors scored on a groundout by Bradi Ziegler.
The Gobblers answered in the third when Plogger scored on a sacrifice fly by Zane Riggleman, and Peyton Allen singled to left field to drive in Cristian Rivera, giving Broadway a 6-1 lead.
Broadway added another run in the fourth when Colby Fesler singled to right field to bring home Peyton Frank.
In the top of the fifth, RC’s Eli Sorrells tripled to center field to bring home Ziegler, and Sorrells scored on a groundout by Clay Irvine to cut Broadway’s lead to 7-3.
Broadway scored its final run on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fifth, and RC scored the last run of the game when Ziegler singled to center field to bring home Majors and Trevor Hoke.
Majors and Ziegler paced RC with two hits each, while five other Wildcats each recorded one hit. RC used three pitchers, combining to strike out four.
Spotswood 4, RC 0
Unable to produce much offense against strong pitching, the Wildcats suffered a 4-0 road loss to Spotswood (11-2, 4-1) on Friday.
The Blazers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the rematch. Landon Buracker scored on a passed ball, and Daniel Glass ran home on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Moyer. Brady Hoover then scored on an RC error.
Spotswood scored its final run in the sixth when Andrew O’Brien hit a solo home run to left field.
The Wildcats had five hits against three Spotswood pitchers, who combined to strike out 12. Registering one hit each for RC were Sorrells, Ziegler, Nolan Stines, Rocky Perlozzo and Drew Potter.
Irvine pitched a complete game for the Wildcats, striking out three while allowing six hits, one walk and four runs, three of them earned.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to William Monroe yesterday and will play a nondistrict home game against Fort Defiance on Thursday at 5 p.m. before playing at Harrisonburg on Friday at 6 p.m. RC will return to district action at home against East Rockingham on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
