State Coaches Honor Cook, Hamilton

Two Parry McCluer High School basketball players, Langston Cook and Victoria Hamilton, received all-state honors from the Basketball Coaches Association of Virginia last week.

Cook, a sophomore guard for the PM boys’ team this winter, was named to the Class 1 all-state first team. Hamilton, a senior for the PM girls’ team, was selected to the Class 1 all-state second team. Both players also received scholar-athlete honors because each had a grade point average of over 3.25.

The Pioneer District player of the year for the boys and a Virginia High School League all-region and all-state firstteam selection, Cook led the Fighting Blues in scoring this season, averaging 24 points per game. He pulled down 8.3 rebounds per game and averaged 5.7 assists per game, 2.3 steals and 1.2 blocks.

Guided by head coach Tyler Kerr, the Blues went 20-6 overall and won the Pioneer District regular-season and tournament titles, going undefeated in the district. In the Region 1C tournament, they were runners-up to George Wythe, who went on to win the Class 1 state title. PM ended its season with an 84-60 loss to Patrick Henry-Glade Spring in the Class 1 state quarterfinals.

Hamilton, who played at both the guard and forward positions, led the Blues in scoring this season, averaging 14 points per game. She was previously selected to the VHSL all-district first team and the all-region second team.

Coached by Adam Gilbert, the PM girls went 17-6 overall and 6-2 in the Pioneer District. As the second seed in the district tournament, the Blues made it to the district championship game, where they fell to top seed Narrows. The Blues’ season ended with a 36-20 home loss to Galax in the Region 1C quarterfinals.
