TA Thrashes RC

Knights Rack Up 12 Hits, Hold Wildcats To One

Managing just one hit, the Rockbridge County High School softball team suffered an 11-0 road loss in five innings to Valley District rival Turner Ashby on Tuesday of last week in Bridgewater.

TA (8-4 overall, 4-1 district) racked up 12 hits and capitalized on four errors by the Wildcats (3-4, 2-3), while the Knights had just one error.

The Knights took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Reaghan Warner scored the first run on a groundout by Laela Shank, and Azlyn Bowman singled to bring home Kaydence Wiliams.

In the second, TA erupted for six runs. Warner singled to left field to drive in Molly Griffin and Olivia Flanders, and Williams singled to center field to bring home Emma Carr. Warner then scored on an RC error, and Shank singled on a grounder to center field to drive in Madison Aderholz. Williams would score on a groundout by Ziva Cale to make it 8-0.

RC’s lone hit came in the top of the third when Cameron Terry led off with a double to right field. After a groundout, Terry would steal third base, but the Knights prevented her from coming home, with a groundout and then a strikeout.

The Knights scored two more runs in the third when Williams singled to left field to bring home Flanders and Carr, stretching their lead to 10-0. TA’s final run came in the fourth when Carr singled to center field to bring home Courtney Spence.

In the fifth, TA ended the game early due to the 10-run mercy rule by making three groundouts.

Carr led the Knights with three hits, while Williams and Shank each had two hits, with Williams leading TA with three RBIs and Shank recording two RBIs.

On the mound, TA’s Annabelle Thyson earned the win, striking out eight and allowing the one hit and no walks in the shutout. Sadie Moore pitched all five innings for the Wildcats, striking out two and surrendering 12 hits, two walks and 11 runs, eight of them earned.

The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to district rival Rocktown last Friday, but that game was postponed due to transportation issues for Rocktown. RC will play host for a doubleheader with Rocktown on Monday, May 19, starting at 5 p.m.

RC was scheduled to visit Broadway yesterday and will continue district action at Spotswood on Friday at 5 p.m. before playing at Parry McCluer in Buena Vista on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Wildcats will attempt to sweep the season series with the Fighting Blues, following an 11-1 home win in five innings on April 5. RC will return to district action at home against William Monroe on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
