The Rockbridge County High School girls tennis team lost a pair of Valley District matches last week, while the Parry McCluer High School girls came up short 5-4 in nondistrict action at Nelson County last Wednesday.
The Wildcats, who had two matches canceled because they didn’t have enough players, fell to 0-6, both overall and in the district.
RC played well at home against Turner Ashby (2-6 overall, 2-2 district) on Tuesday of last week, but the Wildcats came up just short, 5-4.
The Wildcats won two of three doubles matches, but the Knights won four of six singles matches. At No. 1 doubles, RC’s Corinna Allen and Julia Newhall teamed up for an 8-3 win. At No. 3 doubles, Wildcats Campbell Bond and Diya Gandhi joined forces for an 8-5 victory.
Bond won 9-7 at No. 5 singles, and Gandhi coasted to an 8-2 victory at No. 6.
On Friday, the Wildcats suffered a 6-0 road loss to Rocktown in a match that was shortened by a thunderstorm. The closest match of the day was at No. 3 singles, where Rocktown’s Evelyn Yang defeated RC’s Eleanor Goodhart 8-6.
Due to weather cancellations, the PM girls were playing their first match in 20 days last Wednesday. PM and Nelson County split their six singles matches, but the Governors won two of three doubles contests, taking a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.
PM’s Olive King and Macy Shafer teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. The Blues’ singles winners were King at No. 2, Peira Conner at No. 3, and Keely Mahaffey at No. 4.
Reviewing the match, PM head coach Alyssa Sewell said it was a “tough loss. We had an off day but I was very pleased with [No. 2[ doubles and the composure I saw in singles. We have a lot to work on, but the mental toughness is getting stronger, win or lose!”
The Wildcats were scheduled to play at TA Monday before playing host to Broadway yesterday and will continue district action at home against Spotswood on Friday before playing host to Staunton in a nondistirct match on Tuesday at the Lexington Country Club courts. RC will then play host to PM next Wednesday, May 7. All matches are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
