Rockbridge County High School sophomores Celia Jones and Abby Harding qualified by time for the Region 3C meet in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles in a five-team track and field meet at Wilson Memorial last Wednesday in Fishersville.
Jones won the race in 17.54 seconds, and Harding placed second in 17.84, both personal records (PRs). Jones also placed second in the 100-meter dash in 13.79 seconds and finished fifth in both of her jumping events, clearing 4 feet, 4- inches and the high jump and leaping 13-9 in the long jump.
Harding placed 11th in the 100-meter dash in 14.88 seconds, finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 28-6.75, and tied for seventh place in the long jump, leaping 13-5.
RC sophomore Emily Carroll won the girls’ 300-meter hurdles in 55.19 seconds, with Waynesboro’s Isabella Nogra placing second in 57.2.
“The girls are doing well with the hurdle events,” said RC head coach Jennifer Showatler.
Carroll tied for seventh place in both of her jumping events, the long jump (13-5) and the triple jump (27-7.75).
Wildcat freshman Ariana Mitchell placed second in the high jump, clearing 4-10, finished third in the 200-meter dash in 29.47 seconds, and came in fifth in the 100-meter dash in 13.95.
RC’s Kyra Strowbridge placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 20.93 seconds and finished eighth in the 100-meter dash in 14.3. Teammate Harper Bruno came in 16th in the 100-meter dash in 14.88 seconds.
The RC girls placed second in the 4 X 100-meter relay in 54.53 seconds, trailing only Waynesboro’s winning time of 53.51.
Freshman Cate Wilson led the RC girls’ throwers, placing fifth in the shot put with a toss of 23-10 and finishing seventh in the discus with a heave of 62-2. RC’s Sydney Knick placed sixth in the shot put (23-8) and eighth in the discus (56-4), while teammate Tasha Shorter placed 10th in the shot put (208).
For the RC boys, Marshall Earhart placed sixth in the 200meter dash in a PR time of 25-16 seconds, 10th in the 100meter dash in 12.33, and seventh in the high jump, clearing 5-2.
Wildcat Jakob Bailey placed fifth in the long jump, leaping 17-5.5, and tied for eighth place in the high jump, clearing 5 feet. Bailey finished 11th in the 200-meter dash in 26.3 seconds and came in 12th in the 100-meter dash in 13.06.
In the team standings, the RC girls placed fourth with 70 points, while the RC boys finished fifth with three points.
Waynesboro won the girls’ meet with 176 points, while Riverheads (103) placed second, and Wilson Memorial (100) finished third. Rounding out the standings were RC and Buffalo Gap (19).
In the boys’ meet, Waynesboro won with 172 points, Riverheads (151) placed second, and WM (92) finished third. Completing the standings were Buffalo Gap (51) and RC.
The Wildcats are hoping to take several athletes to the Dogwood Track Classic, which will take place at the University of Virginia’s Lannigan Field on Friday and Saturday.
