RC Baseball And Softball Teams Take Down Blue Streaks

Both the Rockbridge County High School softball and baseball teams won decisively over visiting Valley District rival Harrisonburg on Tuesday evening in Lexington. The RC softball team (3-3 overall, 2-2 district) earned a 6-1 win, while the RC baseball team (3-4, 2-2) cruised to a 15-0 win in three innings.

Both RC teams got impressive performances from their pitchers. On the softball field, RC junior hurler Sadie Moore pitched a complete game, striking out eight while allowing four hits, no walks and one unearned run. For the RC baseball team, senior Clay Irvine pitched a perfect game. In three innings, Irvine struck out four while surrendering no hits, no walks and no runs.

On the softball field, after two scoreless innings, the Wildcats, who were coming off a 6-0 road lost to East Rockingham on Monday, scored three runs in the third inning against Harrisonburg (0-5, 0-2). Page Wright singled on a grounder to right field to bring in Brooke Hostetter and Gabby Brown for the first two runs. Landrey Campbell scored the third run when Moore doubled on a fly ball to center field.

The Wildcats scored their other three runs in the fourth. Cameron Terry and Kayleigh Rosson crossed home plate on Harrisonburg errors, and Hostetter scored on a groundout by Brown. Harrisonburg scored its lone run in the top of the seventh when Kayli Alvarado ran home on an RC error.

Campbell and Terry led the Wildcats with two hits each, while Wright, Moore, Hostetter and Willow Rogers each had one hit. Alvarado and Delaney Dayton paced the Blue Streaks with two hits each.

Harrisonburg committed five errors, while RC had one.

Dayton pitched a complete game for Harrisonburg, striking out one while allowing eight hits, three walks and six runs (one earned).

On the baseball field, the Wildcats carried the momentum from their 6-3 district road win over previously undefeated East Rockingham on Monday. 

Against Harrisonburg (0-6, 0-3), the Wildcats exploded for 13 runs in the first inning and added two more in the third before the Blue Streaks decided to go home.

RC recorded eighth hits, led by Drew Potter and Rocky Perlozzo with two each. In the first inning, Potter hit a three-run home run.

Harrisonburg committed two errors, while RC had none.

After returning from spring break, both RC teams will continue district action at Turner Ashby next Tuesday, April 22, at 6 p.m.
