GEORGE TOMPKINS
George Jones Tompkins (1929-2026), aka “Captain George,” passed away peacefully on Oct. 15, 2026. He was surrounded by family in his home in Buena Vista when he returned to his Heavenly Father and Savior.
George was born in Newark, N.J., the second child of Albert Gallatin Tompkins and Beatrice Wiedmann. He was raised in Maplewood, N.J., and moved with his family to their home at the Jersey Shore in Bay Head. He attended the Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tenn., and then graduated from Point Pleasant BeachHigh School in New Jersey.
He was the youngest to be awarded his Master Papers by the U.S. Coast Guard to operate commercial vessels. George was the proud captain of The Ranger and the Miss Point Pleasant, which were docked in Brielle and Point Pleasant, N.J. He was a pillar of the fishing community of the Jersey Shore, and will be remembered for his steady hand on the wheel. His unmatched knowledge of local waters provided guidance to national security and law enforcement. He was a member of the Live Liners of New Jersey, where he received numerous awards.
George loved, and was loved, by anyone who had the pleasure to meet him. He was always ready to strike up a conversation. Armed with an infectious smile, his cheerful and positive spirit brightened the lives of those around him. George was an avid PennState, Duke and Southern Virginia University men’s volleyball fan.
He had a gift for connecting with people and was blessed with many lifelong friendships which he valued dearly. He was happiest enjoying a good steak, tackling a home improvement project, riding his electric trike around Buena Vista and spending time with his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, dedication and service to his neighbors that will be deeply missed by all.
George was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and loved his interactions with others of his faith. He was best known for quietly receiving Church assignments to assist others, most of whom had no idea that George was involved. His reward was seeing lives changed for the better. He loved his fellow man.
George was a beloved husband to Peggy for nearly 71 years, father to Russell (Jeanne) Tompkins of Buena Vista, David (Lori) Tompkins of Lexington, and Beth Pisarcik (Jim, dec.) of Spring Lake, N.J. He was an uncle to man, brother to Ann Hewat of Ligonier, Pa., and James Tompkins of Long Island, N.Y. George loved his role as grandpa, and great-grandpa to tons of kids.
Wishing you smooth sailing on your final voyage. You are anchored in our hearts forever.
