Born to Amy Baksa Scheuer and the late Harry Scheuer.

When you give birth to a child, it is beyond your wildest thoughts about parenting that you would one day be writing an obituary for them.  But here I am attempting to find the words to do just that ...... it’s hard .... and don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Marten decided to come into this world two weeks early ..... right in the middle of the 1986 Boston Celtics/Houston Rockets finals championship game!!  His official birth day was June 9, 1986 whereas the game was June 8, 1986 (just wanted to insert that bit of info for all those NBA basketball fans who think I was off a day).  Marten was an only child for his parents, Amy Baksa Scheuer and Harry Scheuer.  Therefore, he had no sibling rivalry growing up.  However, he had the constant companionship of a group of dogs called Lhasa Apso ... the mother, father and two offspring.  Dogs were always a big part of his life.

Where we lived in Massachusetts, between Concord and Lexington (and not to forget Boston), was a hotbed of history.  With his father as his mentor, Marten developed a love of history.  We explored everything that we could.  In fact, on Patriots Day, we had the militia marching right past our front yard.  What an awesome sight for a little guy!

Growing up, Marten was introduced to various types of music by (you guessed it) his father who grew up in NYC where blues, jazz, boogie-woogie, and classical music were very common.  Marten started playing piano at age five, and developed an unbelievable ear for music. He was able to reproduce a piece of music he heard, just by ear, on the piano.  He truly had a gift considering that neither parent played any instrument, but both enjoyed listening to music.

We moved here to Lexington, Virginia (another hotbed of history) in 1995.  Marten attended Central Elementary (1995-1997) and Lylburn Downing Middle School (1997-2000).  He attended Fishburne Military for two years and finished high school at Miller School in Crozet.  During his school years here in Lexington, Marten took up two more instruments. One of them was the clarinet, where he exceled in District and Regional competitions during his years at Lylburn Downing.  

Marten also loved being outdoors.  He and his new puppy friend (a Border Collie) would love to explore our farm.  The Border Collie’s name was ‘Ten’, so when we were to call them home for dinner, we felt that either one of them would hear the ‘ten’; either Marten or Ten .... it worked!  The love of outdoors led to joining the Boy Scouts.  He became a Scout in 1997 and ascended to the rank of an Eagle Scout in 2001.

Marten graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor’s Degree in  Engineering Science in 2008.  He then joined the US Navy, attending their Officer Candidate School located in Rhode Island (our first trip back to New England since we moved here).  He left the Navy in 2017 as a Naval Officer, having served on two ships, the USS Mitscher and the Iwo Jima.  While in the Navy, he earned a master’s degree in Human Systems Integration from the Naval Postgraduate School.

As I said at the beginning of this obituary, it is hard to find the words to begin your child’s obituary, and now I am finding myself not being able to stop, but I will ......

There will be a Celebration of Life for Marten on Saturday, October 24, 2026 from 11am - 1pm at New Monmouth Presbyterian Church.
