NELLIE CASH

NELLIE CASH

NELLIE CASH

Nellie Tyree Cash, lovingly known as Mamaw, 91, of Onalaska, Texas, passed away on Sept. 14, 2026.

She was born on Feb. 5, 1935, in RockbridgeCounty. Nellie was raised on a farm alongside her nine siblings, growing up with a deep understanding of family and community. It was an environment where you shared whatever you had with neighbors and friends, even when you didn’t have much yourself — a lesson in generosity that stayed with her throughout her life. Such lessons were evident in her work environment too, as Nellie dedicated many years of service to Western State Hospital, from which she eventually retired.

Known for her unmatched zest for life, Nellie lived with a vibrant, joyful spirit. She loved trips to the casinos, shopping, flatfoot dancing, playing competitive games of Scrabble, and expressing her creativity through painting. But her most favorite times were the "surprise" parties at her home, where she would have all those special to her under her roof. And you could never leave without hearing, in the thickest, sweetest Appalachian accent, that "Mamaw's door is always open!"

Throughout her life, she faced and overcame numerous obstacles with incredible strength and grace. She remains the beautiful, bedazzled matriarch of the family, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and love. Above all else, she cherished spending quality time with those she held dear.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Leonard Tyree and Ella Clark Tyree; her siblings, Glen Tyree, Lindsay Tyree, Philander Tyree, Herman Tyree, Martha Sorrels, Ann Smith, Juanita Andrews, and Isabel Robertson; and her beloved husband, Zane William Cash.

She is survived by her brother, Early Tyree, and her three daughters, Melissa Garner (Ron), Sherry Cash, Kimberly Dubcak (Jimmie), and her forever son-in-law Rick Hall; her six grandchildren, Christopher Cash, Tyree Hall (Erica), Whitney Byers-DuBois (Travis), Jordan Byers (Lea), Sydney Rexrode (Nathan), and Austin Byers (Martin); and her 10 great-grandchildren, Brady, Olivia, Camden, Parker, Gianna, Cheyenne, Jordan Jr. (JJ), Sawyer, Daisy, and Griffin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to The Alzheimer's Association, alz.org, in Mamaw's memory.
