Sandra Sue Hamrick Harlow died peacefully at White Birch Communities on Friday, March 27, 2026. 

Sandy was born July 17, 1939, in Elkins, W.Va., to Arden Gay and Sadie Wood Hamrick.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lyle Harlow; brother, Neil P. Hamrick; sister-in-law, Linda G. Hamrick; and granddaughter, Sadie Rose Harlow.

Sandy grew up in Mingo, W.Va., and attended Mingo Elementary and Tygarts Valley High School. She was a member of Mingo Presbyterian Church. Sandra started her college education at Berea College in Kentucky. She paused her time in college to marry Ed on June 6, 1958. Soon after, they moved to Fort Sill in Oklahoma so Edward could complete his active-duty service with the U.S. Army. Upon their return to Virginia, they spent a short time in Lexington, and then settled in Harrisonburg.

In 1969, Ed and Sandy moved to their farm in Mt. Solon, which they owned and operated for 41 years. There, they raised two sons, Lyle Hamrick Harlow and Edward Lee Harlow.

Sandy continued her education at Madison College/James Madison University, earning a Bachelor of Arts and then Masters in Education. She was a reading specialist in Staunton City Schools for more than 30 years, during which time she helped thousands of children learn to read.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mt. Solon for over 40 years. As a pillar of her church community, she led by example and strived to make her church and congregation better. We as a family know she has received her eternal life through Christ's sacrifice.

Sandy is survived by her sons, Lyle and Lee; daughter-in-law, Regina Cyzick Harlow; and grandchildren, Eli David, Elsie Ray, Korana Sky and Reese Everett Harlow.

A memorial service celebrating Sandy's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mount Solon.
