Zella “Cookie” Tyree Carawan, 94, of Buena Vista, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026. 

She was born Dec. 31, 1931, in Rockbridge County, to the late Philander Tyree and Julia Sorrells Tyree.

Cookie was a faithful and active member at McCutchenChurch.  She loved music and dancing.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Wayne Carawan; brothers, Archie Tyree and Ray Tyree; and sisters, Virginia Lineberry, Mary Slagle, Rose Tyree, and Polly Matteson.

Surviving are her children, James R. Carawan (Lorrie) and Kim Carawan; three grandchildren, Cody Carawan (Megan), Caleb Carawan, and Casi Carawan; one great-grandchild, Colton Carawan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with Brother Dorsey Hostetter officiating. Burial will be private. 

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
