Born on Oct. 21, 1946, he was the son of Clarence E. Berry and Edna Crawford Berry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Clelon Roberta Breeden Berry, whose love and companionship remained a treasured part of his life.

Mr. Berry proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1967 until 1973. Following his military service, he dedicated himself to his community as a member of the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department from 1974 until 1981. Throughout his life, Gates was known for his impeccable work ethic, his generosity, and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He and his wife were cherished neighbors whose kindness touched the lives of many.

Gates retired as an accountant from Hammersley Motors after many years of faithful service. He was also a devoted member of Faith Baptist Church in Madison Heights, where he faithfully worshiped alongside his church family.

He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Kevin Berry and wife, Jennifer, and Michael Berry and wife, Tangie; one sister, Sandra Tucker and husband, John; and five beloved grandchildren, Bailey D. Berry, Jackson G. Berry, Kacey L. Berry, Cody R. Berry, and Cameron B. Berry. His family was his greatest joy, and he will be remembered for his love, strength, integrity and quiet example of service to others.

A funeral service was conducted Friday, Aug. 7, at Faith Baptist Church by Pastors Dan Reichard and Seth Campbell. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors were rendered by American Legion Post 104 of Appomattox in recognition of his honorable service to his country.

Gates will be deeply missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of faith, service, kindness, and dedication will continue to live on in the hearts of those he loved.
