He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Wounded in combat, he was awarded the Purple Heart in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice. His military service remained a lifelong source of pride, and he continued to support fellow veterans as a Life Member of Brigadier General.

Leon was previously employed as a custodian at Washington and Lee University, a cook at Fancy Hill Restaurant in Natural Bridge, and Earl Austin’s right-hand man at Crossroads Auto Sales in Glasgow.

He leaves to cherish a son, Leon Jr. (Andrea); grandsons, Leon, III, Ari and Liam; brothers, Clifford Fields (Brenda) and Russell Fields; aunt, Barbara Johnson; uncle, George Bolden (Geraldine); and former wife, Wilma; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, fellow veterans, extended family and friends. Leon will be remembered for his courage, generosity and infectious humor.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. at the James E. Thompson Community Center, 207 Catawba Street, Glasgow. A repast will follow the service. NG
