Maxine Fitzgerald Campbell, 88, of Waynesboro, and formerly of Buena Vista, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 20, 2026.

She was the daughter of the late Paulus and Maybelle Fitzgerald. A proud graduate of Fairfield High School, Maxine went on to a long career with Virginia Power, from which she eventually retired. Most recently, Maxine was a resident at Birch Gardens in Staunton, Virginia, where she leaves behind a beloved Birch Gardens family and an exceptionally kind care team.

Maxine has now joined her loving husband, Erskin, in heaven after a marriage of nearly 50 years. As the Chief of Police's wife, she was a true character and affectionately known as the "Queen Bee of Enderly Hill"—a nod to Erskin’s thriving honey and beekeeping business. A beloved mother, doting grandmother, and caring matriarch, she will be missed, but not forgotten.

A devoted member of Buena Vista Baptist Church, Maxine shared her talents by singing in the choir and participating as a long-time member of the Golden Circle Sunday School class. She was well known both at church and throughout the community for her legendary, made-from-scratch homemade coconut cream pies. Maxine loved to bake, cook, and host big family events. Her capstone event every year was the family Christmas breakfast, where she fixed fried oysters, tomato gravy, and buttermilk pancakes. The annual white elephant gift exchange always provided enough entertainment to last into the new year, sometimes entirely at her expense.

Maxine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen Campbell Amato and Henry Amato of Fishersville; and her two granddaughters, Lauren Amato-Holstead (Jon) and Victoria Amato-Truman (Taylor), who lovingly called her "Mimi." She was eagerly anticipating the arrival of her first great-grandchild, Henry "Atlas" Amato-Holstead, expected this fall. She is also survived by one sister, Peggy Lowdermilk (David); one brother, P. Duaine Fitzgerald (Susan); multiple special nieces, nephews, and cousins; and Laura Brown, her dedicated caregiver and dearest companion over these last couple of years.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Buena Vista Baptist Church, located at 2173 Chestnut Ave., Buena Vista, VA, with Pastor Blake Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
