PHYLLIS MOORE

PHYLLIS MOORE

Dorothy “Phyllis” Moore of Buena Vista died June 23, 2026. She was born July 30, 1941.

In passing, Phyllis joins her mother, Axie Belle McManamay Moore, native of Forge Road, and her father, James Arnold Moore, of Plank Road, both of Glasgow.

She is survived by her sister in Roanoke, Effie Marie Moore, and many caring cousins.

A lifelong resident of Buena Vista, she was very proud of her community and very involved.

She graduated from Parry McCluer High school in 1959 and was active in reunions and events of the school. She was a flute player in the PMHS band. After graduation she spent over four decades working in the infirmary of Virginia Military Institute helping cadets through their needs and she was very proud of her time there. After retirement she enjoyed the many friends she often worked with at the Buena Vista City Hall. She was a lifelong member of the Stone Church of the Brethren where there too she was active and held many roles in the church.

She was a sports fan of all balls you could throw, kick, roll or bat – a bowler, a golfer, softball player, going to and winning a state championship with the softball team. She followed football teams of Washington Redskins, VMI, Virginia Tech and anything PMHS.

Phyllis was a very giving and caring person. She would haul PMHS cheerleaders to their away sports games in her personal car. She once got a call from a VMI cadet’s parents that their son would miss curfew if not picked up from a delayed plane and they could not go to Roanoke to get him so she jumped in her car and got him back in time. She was always doing something for others including aunts and many family members, caring for ill relatives and taking them on road trips – usually always driving.

We want to thank the compassionate, caring staff at Shenandoah Health and Rehab in Buena Vista during the time she spent there, as well as Hospice Care.

The funeral will be conducted in Buena Vista at the Fincastle Baptist Church, Rockbridge Campus, 2162 Forest Ave., Buena Vista, VA 24416 (former Stone Church of the Brethren) Thursday, July 2, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Eric Evje. Burial will be at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens following the end of the service.

Memorial contributions, if desired, can be sent to Parry McCluerHigh School, Hall of Fame Fund, 100 Bradford Drive, Buena Vista, VA24416.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
