JOE FIGLO

JOE FIGLO

Joseph Louis Figlo (Joe), 89, of Lexington, passed away peacefully on the Feast of St. Joseph, Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Promedica Total Rehab Plus, Moorestown, N.J.

Joe was born in New Brunswick, N.J., the elder son of the late Louis and Matilda Figlo. Living in Highland Park, N.J., he married his wife Johanna (nee Waligroski) in 1958.

Joe joined the Highland Park Fire Department as a volunteer and paid firefighter, rising to the rank of lieutenant. He enlisted with the U.S. Army Reserve and was honorably discharged in 1962. He and Johanna moved to Metuchen, N.J., where he resumed his firefighting as a volunteer for the Eagle Hook & Ladder Company, Metuchen Fire Department for 18 years. They retired to live in Lexington for the last 22 years.

Joseph kept a handful of close friends with whom he spent hours cooking, baking, gardening and watching football. He was also a tinkerer. He loved working in his shed with country music playing while fixing his lawnmowers and woodworking.

He spent afternoons watching the hummingbirds stop at the feeders on his back porch.

During his career, Joe was a tradesman. He loved to fix things. He worked as a
professional painter at Rutgers and afterwards started his own business doing home improvements. Joe learned to bake from his father-in-law and became a master baker.

Joe loved baking. He and Johanna opened and operated The Old Post Bakery in Edison, N.J., where he demonstrated his creativity and skills making elaborate and unique wedding cakes. In 1976 he was given the opportunity to reopen the on premises bake shop at Princeton University for their student and staff dining services. He repaired the machines, created and tested the recipes, trained a new staff and successfully produced baked goods daily for every meal for 25 years. He retired from Princeton University in 2001.

Joe was a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather. His sister, Diane (Michael) Dolgos, predeceased him in August of 2025. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Johanna; his brother Adam (Carole Jean) Figlo; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Theresa (Louis) deLise, Judith (Ronald Rakos) Figlo, and Lynda (Gene) Swanhart; and four grandchildren, Casey Spears, Abby Beizer, Brendan Daly and Sean McAllister. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
