WILLIAM HASLAM
Born May 1, 1931, he was a son of Jay Haslam and Helen Porter Haslam.
His life was marked by wisdom, hard work, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and community.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Ann Haslam.
A self-made man, he built a life through determination, integrity and perseverance. He was widely respected for the meaningful contributions he made to the city of Buena Vista and to Southern Virginia University, where his dedication and impact touched many lives over the years. He believed strongly in giving back to his community and quietly helped countless people through both his actions and his kindness.
Above all else, he was a loving and devoted family man whose generosity knew no bounds. He found great joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially spending time outdoors caring for and mowing his lawn, something he truly took pride in. Those who knew him will remember his strong work ethic, steady guidance, warm heart, and the way he made others feel welcomed and valued.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Shields Haslam; children, Debra Todd (Skip), Denise Fitzpatrick, Diane Haslam, Dina Litrides (Jim), William Haslam Jr. (Stacy) and Michael Haslam (Maria); 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.
His legacy of love, resilience and service will live on through his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
His favorite quote was “I lived a long, good life and like Sinatra, ‘I did it my way.’” Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
