Janice Faye Carter, lovingly known as “JC” or “Lightning”, 67, of Buena Vista, went to be with the Lord peacefully on April 16, 2026, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. 

She was born on June 11, 1958, in Buena Vista, and was a lifelong member of the community.  Known for her warmth, strength, and vibrant spirit, Janice touched the lives of many through her kindness and dedication to those around her. Janice was especially devoted to her family. 

She was preceded in death by her loving mother, Bessie Douglas Carter.

Janice is survived by her loving father, Claude Carter Sr.; her six siblings, Rose Wallace of Buena Vista, Michael “Hookie” Carter of Buena Vista, Claudia “Squeaky” Carter of Buena Vista, Sandra Carter of Buena Vista, Claude Carter Jr. of Chesapeake, and George Carter (Loredana) of Fishersville. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.  She is also survived by two uncles, Jesse Carter (Elaine) and LeRoy Carter (Josie), and a special aunt, Lena Nowlin. 

Janice graduated from Parry McCluer High School in 1976 and attended Ferrum College for a short time.  She worked at Parry McCluer High School, Reeves Brothers, the sawmill, the Blue Bird plant, and later retired from Munters.  She was known as a very hardworking and dedicated individual.

Janice will be remembered for her strong sense of giving, her love of sports, and the joy she brought to her family, friends, and community.  She played softball and basketball, where she earned the nickname “Lightning.”  In 2021, she was inducted into the Parry McCluer High School Athlete Hall of Fame – Go Blues! Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at GreenHill Cemetery.
