Richard Wayne Gilliam, of Buena Vista, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2026, unexpectedly at Carilion Roanoke MemorialHospital. He was 85 years old. 

Richard was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Rockbridge County to the late Susie Aaron and Smith Payne Gilliam.       

He graduated from Natural Bridge High School and was drafted into the Army.  He was stationed in Germany and proudly served his country from 1960 to 1964.  Richard was retired from Modine Manufacturing.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Huffman Gilliam; his daughter, Lori Ramsey and husband Skip; and one sister, Brenda Marshall and husband Vince.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Freddie Lee Gilliam, and a sister, Ruth Ann Gilliam.

Richard was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed.

At his request there will be no services.
