Retired U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Lenwood H. Johnson Sr. passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 4, 2026, his 97th birthday.

Born and raised in Lexington, Lenwood graduated from Lylburn Downing High School and subsequently attended college in Detroit where he earned a degree in business management.

It was while stationed in Germany that he met and married the love of his life, Emma. With the exception of his tours in Vietnam and Korea, Lenwood and Emma were inseparable throughout his military career. They returned to Lexington after his retirement from the Army in 1977 where they have since lived a life full of wonderful memories, profound devotion and boundless love.

The last surviving child of Lexington natives Willie P. Johnson and Alice M. Johnson, he was preceded in death by his siblings Hughey E. Johnson Sr., William Johnson, Isaac W. Johnson and Mary J. Kenney.

Per his wishes and with the assistance of Harrison Funeral Home, a private graveside service was conducted at Evergreen Cemetery with his immediate family. The family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this extremely difficult time.
