James Earl “Gus” Moore, 78, of Buena Vista died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Gus was born May 2, 1947, in Lexington to the late Joseph Rulepherd “Pete” Moore and Marie Deacon Moore.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan Mays Moore; daughter, Jordan Moore Czekner (Joseph); daughter-in-law, Robin Adams Moore; grandchildren, Austin, Ethan, Madison, and McKenna Moore and Eden Czekner; sister, Rita Moore Blackwell; special cousin, Brenda Moore Wheeler; lifelong best friend, Steve Harris, and many other special friends; and faithful golden retriever, Bailey.
He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Scott Moore.
Gus graduated from Parry McCluer High School in 1966 and attended Phillips Business College in Lynchburg. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam.
After service, he worked for Huger Distributing Company, then at the Natural Bridge Juvenile Correctional Center for 20 years. He retired from NBJCC in 2009, and because he couldn’t sit still for long, he went to work at Virginia Military Institute as a security guard and then for Buena Vista City Schools Transportation.
There will be a graveside service at Green Hill Cemetery, Friday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m.
