Bettie Rivers Mayes, 89, of Buena Vista, passed away, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025.

She was born July 29, 1936, in Durham, N.C., the daughter of the late George F. Rivers and Myrtle ClarkRivers.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Wyatt Mayes; sister, Doris Coleman; brother, Alfred Rivers; and granddaughter, Amanda Mason. 

Surviving are her children, Timothy Mayes (Tracy), Grace Tilson (Alan), Mary Mason (Kenneth), and Ruth Mayes (Rod Johnson); grandchildren, Brenda Mayes, Marie Nicely, Rebecca Thacker, David Tilson, Todd Mason, Elizabeth Piro, Kerith Brown, Jessica Sullivan, RoseAnna Pagans, Tabitha Boan, and William Alex Webb; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Clara Evans; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at Mt.Zion BaptistChurch by the Rev. Hank Robertson. Burial will follow at IrishCreek CommunityCemetery. 

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Home.
