DOUG DORSEY

DOUG DORSEY

James Douglas Dorsey passed away on Oct. 17, 2025, at UVA Health Medical Center after a weeks-long battle following his injury in a motorcycle accident on Sept. 6 when he struck a deer near Middlebrook. He was 76 years of age.

Doug was born the son of James Ernest Dorsey and Lura Fields Dorsey then of Nettie, W.Va.

Doug graduated from Albemarle County High School following his family’s relocation to Crozet, where he was an avid football and basketball player. He later attended Ferrum College and did some course work at UVA. He subsequently joined his father’s land surveying firm in Lexington and practiced as a licensed land surveyor until his retirement in 2009.

Doug was an avid motorcycle enthusiast who regularly traveled across the country making friends far and wide and riding as much as 30,000 miles a year on his adventures. He had previously served as a trustee of Rockbridge Baptist Church and had served with the Gideons. In recent years, he split his time between Virginia and Florida so that he could enjoy riding and outdoor activities year round. Doug loved life and to play hard. His body grew older, but he was always a kid at heart.

He is survived by his sons Brandon Douglas Dorsey (Tiffaney) of Fairfield, and Brock Tilden Dorsey of Harrisonburg (children from his marriage to Constance Coffey Dorsey); his grandchildren, Megan, Ella, Cohen, Gemma and Vale; one brother, Michael W. Dorsey (Marlene); and a number of special nieces and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two stepbrothers, Darren and Mark Farrish (via Elleanor F. Dorsey).

A memorial service will be held at Harrison’s Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial and a graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in the Fields Cemetery in Nettie, W.Va., where he will be laid to rest beside his mother. A reception will follow at Olive Branch Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory.
