GATHA HALL

GATHA HALL

GATHA HALL

On July 26, 2025, Gatha Virginia Reynolds Hall moved peacefully into her heavenly home surrounded by her loved ones. She lived each day of her life in anticipation and preparation for this day of celebration.

Gatha was born on June 21, 1933, in Rockbridge County to her loving parents, Aaron M. Reynolds and Zola Knick Reynolds. Along with her parents, Gatha was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson W. Hall; her son, Norris Hall; brothers, Silvea Reynolds and Clefard Reynolds; sister, Nadine Goodbar; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tonya and Mark Fontenot; granddaughter and her husband, Hayden and Justis Richardson; and great-granddaughter, Zola Ann Richardson. She is also survived by her sister, Hilda R. Morris; sisters-in-law, Ella Belle H. Clark, Ethel Hall and Barbara Reynolds; brother-in-law, Oscar Hall; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Gatha graduated from Effinger High School, where she was known as quite the athlete, playing both softball and basketball. She held various jobs throughout her life, but her greatest passion — and what many will remember most — was working alongside her husband Nelson to run their beef cattle farm on North Buffalo for 25 years.

Gatha loved the Lord, life, and a good laugh. Her smile and laughter were infectious. She was an active member of Collierstown Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and in many other roles. She held several leadership positions within the Collierstown Presbyterian Women and served for many years as co-chair of the Presbyterian Women’s Bereavement Committee. She also helped organize and host the Effinger Community Lunch Bunch at the church. Gatha was a faithful member of the C&F Circle and the CPC Prayer Chain. In 2017, she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from Collierstown Presbyterian Church, and in 2020, she received the Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Membership Award.

Never one to seek the spotlight, Gatha worked tirelessly in the background to support her community and family in whatever ways were needed. She enjoyed volunteering at the Effinger firehouse dinners, the Palmer Community Ice Cream Supper, and at Effinger Elementary School as both a Book Buddy and a gardener for the Roots and Shoots program. Her family was her life — she loved them deeply, and they loved her just as much.

A celebration of Gatha’s life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. at Collierstown Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Collierstown Presbyterian Church Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held in the church's fellowship hall after the burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Collierstown Presbyterian Church’s Backyard Mission Program, 31 Church Drive, Lexington, VA 24450; or Effinger Ruritan Club’s Nelson Hall Education Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 144, Lexington, VA 24450.
