ELIZABETH LINDSAY

ELIZABETH LINDSAY

Elizabeth Lovie Lindsay, 74, of Fairfield left this world for a better place on July 8, 2025. She was also known as Liz, Betty, Bet, Beany, Buggy, Sis and Sissy.

Sis had been in declining health for several months before being diagnosed with leukemia. She passed at the University of Virginia Medical Center with family by her side.

She was born Dec. 18, 1950, to Andrew Warren Lindsay Sr. and Rubye Parrent Lindsay. She grew up on the banks of the Maury River in the Alone Mill section of Rockbridge County with three older brothers and a bratty younger sister to whom she was the best big sister ever.

The Lindsay homeplace was full of love and usually overrun by friends. The front porch and yard welcomed all and was complete with flood lights for the late night killer badminton games. It definitely helped that Mom always had the refrigerator fully stocked. More than once the Sunday after church dinner was sampled by hungry teenagers on Saturday night. In on the shenanigans were usually Kenneth Morris (who was and is more like a brother) and childhood friends, Tommy, Eve, Rhea, Susan, Connie and many more over the years.

Sis graduated from Lexington High School in 1968 and The College of William and Mary in 1972. She taught school in Rockbridge County for 12 years, first at Goshen Elementary then at Brownsburg. Her students enjoyed her unteacher-like antics and still tell stories of her eraser throwing ability. For several years after teaching, Sis was part of an all-female painting crew then worked at Hershey Chocolate for 17 years until a car accident ended her career.

Sis enjoyed helping anyone and everyone, two legged and four legged. She was always ready to go out to eat or join in with a family or friend gathering that included food and hopefully leftovers to take home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her oldest brother, Andrew “Drew” Warren Lindsay Jr. Left to cherish her memory and tell stories on her are Charles Barton Lindsay and Susan B. Henniker of Richmond; James P. Lindsay of Lexington; Paula Lindsay and Julie Altizer of Buena Vista; sister-in-law Linda Christie of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; nephews Ryan, Scott and John Lindsay of New York; nephew Andrew “Drew” Lindsay of Vinton; and devoted cousins Doug and Julia Sensabaugh. Also left behind is special friend Rose Shelton who made it possible for Sis to stay in her home of 50 years as she faced declining health and who will care for her pets going forward. Other special friends include Janice Wenger, Kathy Helmick, Sam Newcomer and Lisa Martin. Lastly her pets whom she adored, Precious her cat and two dogs, Sarah and Buddy.

To remember our dear Sis, please do a kind deed, hug someone you love, go out to eat and please consider a donation to Furever Friends, 2463 Beech Ave, Buena Vista, VA 24416 A Celebration of Life for Elizabeth Lindsay will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 1340 Thornhill Road, Lexington at noon. True to the Lindsay motto that food is love, there will be a light lunch for all to join in. Please come with a favorite picture or memory to share.
