It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Janet Ann Ayers Carter of Buena Vista¸ who left us peacefully on June 25, 2025, at the age of 87.

Born on April 29, 1938, Janet was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She touched the lives of many with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love, proudly wearing the name “Granny” to many.

Janet was the heart of her family, always putting others first and creating a legacy of love and laughter. With an enthusiastic sense of humor, she had a unique ability to bring joy and laughter to those around her. She cherished spending time with her family and friends, creating special memories through cooking, storytelling, and family traditions. Janet was loved by many lifelong friends she made while working at E.R. Moore in Buena Vista.

She is survived by her loving children: sons Steve Carter and wife Debbie of Buena Vista, and Barry Carter of Fredericksburg; daughters Vicky Quarles and husband Robert of Evington, and Pamela McDonald and husband Bennie of Vale, NC. Proud grandmother to Donnie (Tracy), John, Melissa, Brittany (Kevin), Samantha, Jimmy, Jason (Jackie), Jessica, Robb (Christine), Chris (Maribeth), Jason (Jessica), Angel (BJ), and Morgan (Tanner). Great-grandmother to Isiah, William, Ada, Emma, Carter, Nicholas, Issac, Graham, River, Grant, Dakota, Ella, Beckett, Aaron, Hanna and Jordan. Great-great-grandmother to Benji, Amelia, Aavery and Waylon. Her siblings include Ronald Ayers and wife Lois of Lexington, and Sandra Rhodes and husband Dale of Richmond.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, James and Alma Ayers of Kerrs Creek, her husband William Carter of Buena Vista, along with brothers Donald, Jimmy, Wayne Ayers, and wife Emily from Lexington.

She leaves behind countless friends who will miss her deeply. A graveside service for family and friends will be held to honor her memory at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens on July 7 at 1 p.m.

We will miss you dearly, Janet, but we are comforted knowing that your love and legacy will live on in us.
