BOB CAMPER

William Robert Camper, affectionately known as Bob, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025.

Born on Oct. 31, 1938, Bob lived a life marked by dedication, kindness and humor. Bob was an avid car lover and the proud owner and operator of Rockbridge Driving School for over 50 years, where he touched the lives of countless students with his expertise and patience. His love for cars was well known among family and friends, and it was a passion that fueled many memories. He was especially fond of his nephews and niece, cherishing the close bonds he shared with each of them. He always enjoyed his visits to North Carolina with his brother’s family or when they would visit him in Virginia.

A faithful member of Manly Memorial Baptist Church, Bob generously shared his musical talents by playing piano during worship services, providing meaningful accompaniment that enhanced the experience for the congregation.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances W. Camper and Theodore M. Camper of Lexington; and by his brother, James T. Camper Sr. of Rutherfordton, N.C.

Bob is survived by his sister-in-law, Linda S. Camper of Rutherfordton, N.C; nephews and niece James T. Camper Jr. of Spindale, N.C., and his daughter Savannah Wesley Camper (Starr) of Forest City, N.C. and their sons Scott and AJ; Deidre C. Ledbetter (Shawn) of Shelby, N.C. and their daughters Jaylen and Aidan; and Daryl Camper (Belinda) of Rutherfordton, N.C. and their children Jonathan Barnes and daughter Corine Willen (Noah). He is also survived by cousins Dennis Camper of Evington, Kevin Camper (Crystal) of Roanoke, Bonnie C. Fix (Dewitt) of Lexington, Tammy C. Nicely (Wayne) of Lexington, Jacqueline W. Talevi of Roanoke, Pam Tinsley (Tom) of Richmond, Steve Ward of Roanoke and numerous other beloved cousins. Surviving spouses of deceased cousins are Sylvia B. Camper of Lexington, Frances C. Turpin of Lynchburg and Sherrie C. Walls of Buena Vista.

A special thanks is extended to Tammy Camper Nicely for her loving assistance to Bob during the past several years. The family also deeply appreciates the staff of Heritage Hall Lexington for their devoted care during his residency.

A celebration of life will be held at Manly Memorial Baptist Church on Saturday, June 21, at 1:30 p.m. with visitation in the sanctuary from noon to 1:15 p.m. The service will be conducted by Rev. Skyler Daniel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Manly Memorial Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory.
