RALPH McDOWELL “MAC” WATTS
RALPH McDOWELL “MAC” WATTS
A proud graduate of Parry McCluer High School, Class of 1966, Mac was a standout athlete who played basketball, football and baseball. He often joked that he was the reason for his youngest brother’s basketball success – a testament to both his sense of humor and his enduring bond with his siblings.
Shortly after high school, Mac was drafted into the U.S. Army and served honorably in Korea from 1966 to 1968. He achieved the rank of sergeant and continued his commitment to service in the reserves until 1972. His time in the military reflected his steadfast dedication and sense of duty.
Mac married the love of his life, Judith Yvonne Pryor Watts, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage before her passing. Their life together was filled with laughter, stories and a shared devotion to family. Mac cherished their son, Chris Watts, and took great pride in his granddaughter, Memphis Watts.
He is also remembered by his brothers, Brian Watts Sr. (Mary) and Joe Watts (Gill); sisters-inlaw Kay Watts and Gerri Pryor; brothers-in-law Frankie Hogan and Sonny Pryor; as well as many nieces and nephews whose lives he touched dearly.
Mac was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith; younger brother, Paul Watts; sister-inlaw, Patsy Hogan; brothers-inlaw, Jim Pryor and Pat Pryor; parents, Ralph M. Watts Jr. and Emma Tomlin Watts; grandparents, Samuel M. Watts and Nellie Watts Jenkins; Howard and Nettie Tomlin; and in-laws, Theo and Ethel Pryor.
Mac had a lifelong passion for sports – especially baseball – and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees. He followed major league baseball history with encyclopedic knowledge and could not be beaten in sports trivia. His love for the game was matched only by his love for storytelling. Mac was a “Big Blue” through and true. Whether recounting family memories or sharing tales from days gone by, Mac’s wit kept those around him laughing. He was known for always having a dollar to chip in – whether for drinks, cigarettes or food – symbolizing both his generosity and camaraderie.
A man of faith, Mac attended Buena Vista Presbyterian Church throughout his life.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and joy to those who remember his stories.
