LUCY JASTREBSKY

Mildred Lucille Agnor Jastrebsky

Lucy was born May 21, 1931, in Lexington and passed away on April 23, 2025, at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth, following a heart attack.

She was the fourth child born of 13 children to parents Paul Edward and Ashley VanNess Agnor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronnie Jastrebsky; brothers Paul Jr., Kenneth, Wayne, Pat, Vernon and Jerry Agnor; and sisters Marie Agnor Hudgins, Jean Agnor Lyon and Connie Agnor White.

Surviving family members are Michael Lee Agnor, Ann Agnor Jones, Faye Agnor Darden and Sandra Agnor Yoemans, along with several nieces and nephews and their families. She is also survived by her daughter Paulette Jastrebsky Edwards and her granddaughter Caitlyn Edwards and many nieces and nephews.

Lucy and Ronnie owned a bar and grill for several years in Chesapeake. Along with the business and Ronnie's job, they grew soy beans on their land and tried their hand at raising cattle and pigs. We tend to skip over that time period and move on to something more pleasant. Let's just say the soy bean business was very successful.

She was a great lover of animals, having several dogs, including hunting dogs, cats and a raccoon. Each visit she made to the vet would end with her bringing back not only her own dog or cat, but another that had been left behind. Blind, deaf or lame, Lucy brought them home to love and care for each and every one. She now leaves behind her much loved Labrador Retriever Gunner, who dearly misses her.

The name Mildred means “gentle strength” and the name Lucy (Lucia) means “light”. That is our much loved and very sorely missed Lucy. Daddy used to say that she would fight the devil himself to right a wrong, and to protect a loved one.

I prefer to leave you with my favorite Shakespeare quote from “A Midsummer Night's Dream” that speaks of Hermia and her fierce, unwavering spirit and bold personality: “Though she be but little, she be fierce.”

That's our Lucy.

A celebration of her life will be held on May 24 at 2 p.m. at the City Park Pavilion in Portsmouth.
