BERNARD NICHOLAS

BERNARD NICHOLAS

With profound love and gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Bernard Paul Nicholas, who departed this life peacefully on April 28, 2025. He was the son of the late Shedrick and Alma Nicholas of Lexington.

Bernard, who was born January 13, 1938, was a man of immense talent, integrity and quiet determination. A 1960 graduate of Hampton University, he earned a degree in Furniture Design and Construction.

His father, Shedrick, whose business was furniture upholstery, construction, design and repair, known as “The House Doctor” for over 40 years, laid the foundation for Bernard’s interest and perfection in wood working and furniture design. He worked for his father while receiving all the beneficial hands-on training and thus beginning his own lifelong passion for craftsmanship and design.

After college and two years of honorable service in the U.S. military as a draftsman with the Army Corps of Engineers, Bernard began working for a French furniture designer as a machinist. But it was in his father’s skilled instructions and teachings, education and entrepreneurship that he would make his most enduring mark.

He began his teaching career in Calvert County, Maryland, as an Industrial Arts Instructor, later transferring to Montgomery County (Bethesda, Maryland), where he continued to teach while launching a business from home. His vision and dedication led to the founding of Nick’s Custom Cabinets, Inc., which grew into a respected name throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. For decades, his company crafted beautiful, unique furniture for many homes in the region, from the most humble to the most elite homes, churches, and offices, each piece a reflection of Bernard’s precision, artistry and pride in his work.

Known affectionately as “Nick” by many of his friends, Bernard was a man of many passions. He had a deep love for music, especially playing the piano, often filling his home with warm, soulful melodies. He cherished outdoor activities and had an adventurous spirit, finding joy in cross-country travel, exploring the beauty of the world around him.

He leaves behind his soul mate of 30 years, Arpita Clayton. Together, Nick and Arpita shared a life filled with laughter, discovery, and unconditional love. Their bond was a true partnership, rooted in friendship, mutual respect and shared passions for music, nature, travel and cabinet making.

Bernard is also survived by his loving daughter, Tiffany Nicholas, and his cherished grandson Bryton Barrett, who were his greatest joys. He leaves behind his devoted sisters Alma Gay Nicholas-Long of Roanoke and Donna Cassell of Casa Grande, Arizona; his brother and sistersin- law, William “Boo” Long, Jacqueline Nicholas of Orlando, Florida, and Jean Nicholas of Richmond; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce, and brothers Johnnie Nicholas and Col. Howard Nicholas.

His quiet strength, brilliant hands, musical soul and generous spirit leave a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

There will be a cremation burial at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Casey House (Montgomery Hospice) 6001 Muncaster Mill Road, Rockville, MD 20855 or to your favorite SPCA, Angels of Assisi, ASPCA, or a loving animal shelter for his love of animals, especially his belated and loved precious kitty “Beethoven.”

Thank You All for Your Prayers, Condolences, Kindness, Support and Love during this Time of Our Loss. God Bless.
