DIXIE SORRELLS

DIXIE SORRELLS

Dixie Fay Thornsbury Sorrells, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and woman of deep faith, passed away peacefully at her home on April 24, 2025, at the age of 99. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and grace to all who knew her.

Dixie was born on Dec. 25, 1925, in Dickenson County to Sam Newberry and Alice Stanley. She made her home in Lexington, where she had lived since 1976.

Dixie was known by all who loved her as a kind and godly woman, whose faith guided her every step. Her greatest joys in life were her faith and her family. She found comfort in the Bible, and always appreciated visits from those who would read scripture to her or sing her favorite hymns. She was a pillar of strength, and always willing to offer a listening ear, words of encouragement, and compassion to those she loved.

She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, Jessie Thornsbury and Cranford Sorrells; her children Carol Sue Thornsbury, Phillip Thornsbury, Jimmie Thornsbury, Ralph Thornsbury; and her granddaughter Kimberly Bossard.

She is survived by her son, Michael Thornsbury (Judi) of Princeton, W.Va.; daughter-inlaw Joann (Mullins) Thornsbury of Lake Frederick; and daughterin- law Carolyn Ruth Thornsbury of Bristol. She is also survived by grandchildren Lisa Thornsbury Sacchini (Joe) of Aldie, Ralph Thornsbury Jr. (Kimberly) of Honaker, Mike Thornsbury of Richmond, Angela Olsen (Dave) of Charles Town, W.Va., Charlene Thornsbury of Bristol, and Katherine Thornsbury (Jack) of Bristol.

In addition to her grandchildren, she was blessed with many great-grandchildren and greatgreat- grandchildren, each of whom brought her joy and pride.

Dixie also held a special place in her heart for her niece Geneva Riffe, and nephews Del and Dennis Thornsbury, who brought her great comfort and joy throughout the years.

She leaves behind a family who adored her and a lifetime of memories that will forever be cherished. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched and the values she instilled. Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in knowing she is now in the presence of her Lord, whom she faithfully served. We celebrate the life of a remarkable woman and thank God for the gift she was to us all.

Our family extends their sincere appreciation to ConnectionsPlus Hospice + Healthcare and TLC care. It takes a special kind of team to do the work that you do and we are forever grateful for the patience, support and dignity you provided in her final days. Your kindness and compassion didn’t go unnoticed, and we will always remember the gentle and loving way you cared for her.

A funeral to honor her life was held on Tuesday, April 29, at Lexington Baptist Church. Burial followed at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.

Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements. NG
