LT. COL. MARC SMALL
LT. COL. MARC SMALL
He passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family. A private memorial will be held at a future date.
Marc was a lifelong scholar and an academic. He possessed a bachelor’s degree in Ancient Greek and European History from Washington and Lee University, a master’s degree in Classical Languages from Yale, and a juris doctorate from William and Mary. He served over two decades in the U.S. Army between active duty and the reserves.
Marc practiced law in Roanoke for over 20 years where he both helped and became a friend to many. He authored two books on cameras and was one of the world’s most knowledgeable collectors of Zeiss Ikon cameras and Leica thread mount lenses.
A connoisseur of bad jokes, he was a staunch opponent in any debate, and had an incredible mind that knew something about everything.
He leaves behind a son, Ian Marc Larew Small, a wife, Pamela C. Small, multiple grandchildren, countless memories, and a collection of books that rivals the Library of Congress.
He would also want everyone to know he was the fifth greatgrandson of the early American pioneer John Fraser, who was played by Ward Bond in the epic, and hugely successful movie, “Unconquered!”
The pleasure was ours Lt. Col. Small. Rest easy. We’ll take it from here.
