JANETTE COLEMAN

Janette Shaw McGeachy Coleman, 73, of Lexington passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024.

She was born in Richmond on Aug. 18, 1951, to Dr. Custis Lansing Coleman and Janet Shaw Fisher Coleman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Mae Coleman James (Tom), and is survived by siblings Anne Louise Coleman, Laura MacMillan Coleman Proctor (Jim) and Custis Lansing Coleman Jr. (Karen); 10 nieces and nephews and her last two Labrador retrievers, Nala and Kiki.

Janette graduated from the Collegiate School in Richmond, and continued her education at Ferrum College, later receiving her master’s degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University. While working, she continued to study painting through workshops with Professor 1-Hsing Ju and other esteemed painters in Lexington, New Mexico and many other places. In the 1980s, she returned to Rockbridge County to pursue her love of art full time. She loved living in the mountains surrounded by art and her many beloved dogs. She joined the Collierstown Presbyterian Church where she was ordained as a ruling elder.

A celebration of life will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025, at Collierstown Presbyterian Church by the Rev. John R. “Skip” Hastings.

The family wishes to express their immense gratitude to Donna Frazier, Janet Scott and her many wonderful nurses and doctors as well as the staff and hospice team at Kendal for taking such amazing care of Janette during her long battle with lung cancer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Collierstown Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society. NG
