J.D. CLEMMER JR.

John Daniel Clemmer Jr., known affectionately as “J.D.,” passed away to join his Lord and Savior in the early morning hours of March 20, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on May 15, 1946, in Rockbridge County, J.D. was predeceased by his parents, John Daniel “Dan” Clemmer Sr. and Kathryn “Kitty” Weeks Clemmer; his in-laws Frank and Delia Higgins; his brother-in-law Larry G. Higgins; his son-in-law Brian Rogers; and his two special friends, Eddie Reid and Shirley Hostetter.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 39 years, Mary Higgins Clemmer, and six children, John Daniel “John” Clemmer III, Tracy Higgins (Brian), Kim Rogers, Summer Clemmer, Linsay Jones (Dana) and Larry “Mac” Clemmer (Kari). His legacy continues through his six grandchildren, Cody Manspile, Alisha Schultz (Grant), Harleigh Rogers, Austin Higgins and Makenzie and Amelia Clemmer. J.D. is also survived by his brother, Joseph B. Clemmer (Lynda Miller); his sister-inlaw Pamela H. Crabb (Clyde); and his brother-in-law Floyd “Buck” Higgins; nieces, cousins and many cherished friends including Misty Flint, Patsy Landes, Lynne Black and Leonard Stewart Jr.

J.D.’s life was marked by his varied interests and contributions. He attended National Business College in Roanoke and wore many hats throughout his 77 years. Not only did he own and operate North Buffalo General Store and serve as a rural mail carrier, but he was also a member of the Oxford Presbyterian Church and the Lexington Moose Lodge. J.D.’s true passion was with the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a charter member and held the position of president for several years. Known as a legendary fundraiser, he was never without a book of raffle tickets in his pocket, always ready to support various organizations.

A special thanks is extended to Dr. William Sayre, Mike Larue, Carilion Clinic Home Health, Connections Plus Hospice Care team, and the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department members for their exceptional care and support. The family would also like to mention his special caregivers Dana and Linsay Jones. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department, 2824 Collierstown Road, Lexington, VA 24450 or Connections Plus Hospice, 315 Meyers St., Lexington, VA 24450.

The funeral was conducted on Saturday, March 23, at Harrison Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Skip Hastings. Burial followed at Oxford Presbyterian Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory. N-G
