Relay For Life Event At Central Aug. 19

The Relay For Life American Cancer fundraiser is making its return to the Rockbridge area for the first time since 2019.

The Relay For Life American Cancer fundraiser is making its return to the Rockbridge area for the first time since 2019.

The event will be held at Central Elementary School on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 7 to 10 p.m.

This event, organized by volunteers, aims to rally local residents, businesses and organizations to join hands in the fight against cancer, bringing hope, support, and awareness to those affected by this devastating disease, said a spokeswoman.

The Relay For Life event will kick off with an opening ceremony that brings participants together to share stories, honor cancer survivors, and ignite the spirit of hope.

Cancer survivors will take the first lap around the track, symbolizing their personal victories over cancer and inspiring hope for others.

Teams of participants will then take turns walking or running around the track throughout the night, symbolizing the ongoing battle against cancer. “This relay format signifies that cancer never rests, and neither will we until a cure is found,” said the spokeswoman.

Participants and teams will engage in various fundraising activities in the lead-up to the event, with all proceeds going towards critical cancer research and support services.

As the sun sets, a luminaria ceremony will honor those who have faced cancer. Participants will light candles inside personalized bags to illuminate the path, symbolizing the hope and perseverance of cancer fighters and survivors. Each bag represents the life of a loved one who has battled cancer ‒ some in remembrance of those who have passed, others in honor of those who continue to fight, and many celebrating the survivors who have overcome this disease.

Luminaria bags may be purchased for $20 in honor or in memory of someone who has or has had cancer. They may be purchased on the website at www.relayforlife. org/rockbridgeva or by visiting Cheryl Hunt at the Lexington Commissioner of Revenue’s office located at 300 E. Washington St., or Robin Moore at the Bank of Botetourt located at 5905 N. Lee Highway, Fairfield. Luminarias will also be available for purchase at the event.
