The Lexington City School Board voted in a special meeting to negotiate a $4,500 contract with a private school bus operator to provide free bus transportation for the city’s elementary school students in kindergarten through seventh grade. - Virginia Military Institute began its 135th year with the matriculation of the new cadet class. - Taking a leave from her teaching position at Lexington High School, Elizabeth C. Ramsey left for Williamsburg to begin graduate study in U.S. history at the College of William and Mary.

The site of a home under construction south of Lexington yielded a bounty of artifacts from hundreds of years ago including a Spanish coin, hand-wrought nails, a brass thimble and pewter buttons. - The 27th annual Rockbridge Community Festival was held in downtown Lexington. - The John W. Elrod Commons opened at Washington and Lee University. The $25 million structure, named for W&L’s 22nd president, houses a bookstore, movie theater and auditorium, a game room and full dining services.
