The Effinger Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank everyone who came out for the July 15 barbecue chicken sales event and those who bought tickets for its raffle drawing. The barbecue sold out and proceeds from the event and the raffle will be used to serve the community.

The Collierstown United Methodist Church recognized four 2023 Rockbridge County High School graduates for their achievement during the morning worship service on Sunday, July 16. Those honored and presented with a Bible were Kate Straub, Elisjsha Wade, and Reagen Woody. Mackenzie Mynes was unable to be present but was recognized for her accomplishment by the congregation. A reception for the graduates followed the worship service.

During the month of July the Collierstown United Methodist Church is providing weekly lake services at 9 a.m. at the Lake Robertson campground chapel for campers and others who would like to attend. Amy Hayslette led the July 16 service and Bob Lesher will lead the service on Sunday, July 23.

Members and friends of the Collierstown United Methodist Church are reminded the congregation will hold its worship service at 11 a.m. on July 30 at the Lake Robertson pavilion followed by a covered-dish picnic.

On Sunday, July 16, Duaine Fitzgerald was the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. worship service of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. Following the worship service, lemonade on the lawn was provided by the Christian Education Committee. On Sunday, July 23, the Rev. Bill Klein will lead the morning worship service and the observance of the sacrament of communion. A congregational meeting will be held following the service for the purpose of electing a Pastor Nominating Committee to begin the search for a new minister.

The Collierstown Presbyterian Women’s annual “School Bag” campaign will begin on Sunday, July 23. Canvas tote bags have been made by Louise Tardy and will be available with lists of supplies to be purchased and placed in each bag. Filled bags are to be returned to the church by Aug. 20 for distribution by Church World Service in the United States and abroad. The church community is invited to participate in this effort and can obtain bags and information by calling the church office, (540) 463-5918. Donations for the purchase of supplies to fill the bags may also be given. Those wishing to make a financial gift to the School Bag campaign should designate the gift for school bags and mail it to Collierstown Presbyterian Church, 31 Church Drive, Lexington, VA 24450. Your help is needed so every student will have the needed supplies when the new school year begins.

The Effinger Community churches are hosting a one night “Community Revival” at the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department on the evening of Aug. 10. The featured speakers for the event are the Rev. Kirk Wade and his wife Dr. Janelle Wade of Just Believe Ministries. The evening will begin with a covered-dish dinner at 6 followed by the revival service at 7. Those coming for supper are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Kenney’s chicken will be provided. Free child care will be available for children between the ages of 3 and 7. Hosting the event are Union View Advent Christian Church, Mt. Horeb and Collierstown United Methodist churches, Oxford and Collierstown Presbyterian churches and Rapps Mill Church.

Plans for the 2024 Effinger Community Birthday Calendar prepared and sold by the Effinger Ruritan Club have been made. The cost of the calendar is $3. Birthday, anniversary, and memorial listings are 30 cents each. Calendars and listings may be purchased by contacting a Ruritan Club member.

Plans for the Palmer Ice Cream Supper sponsored by the Effinger Ruritan Club are underway. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Palmer Community Center. Live musical entertainment, good food and lots of delicious homemade ice cream in a variety of flavors will be available for purchase. The Effinger Ruritan Club looks forward to welcoming patrons to this community event.
