‘Futile State’ Exhibit At Staniar

Washington and Lee’s Staniar Gallery is presenting “Futile State,” a solo exhibition by sculptor Sam Blanchard.

The show will be on view through Feb. 8. Blanchard will give an artist’s talk on Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 5:30 p.m. in Wilson Hall’s Concert Hall. The lecture will be followed by a reception for the artist.

Blanchard uses computer- based fabrication and presentation methods to create works that interrogate the human experience in the age of technology. Previous projects include kinetic sculptures, interactive environments and video installations.

Blanchard is currently associate professor of studio art in the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech. He has an active international exhibition record, with solo exhibitions at such venues as the Las Vegas Contemporary Art Center, The Delaware Contemporary and The New Galley (Calgary).

His collaborative works in the fields of computer science and engineering have been presented at such venues as South-by-Southwest, World Maker Faire and the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Staniar Gallery is located on the second floor of Wilson Hall, inside Washington and Lee University’s Lenfest Center for the Arts. When campus is open to the public, gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (540) 458-8861.
