Feb. 12, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: DJT is moving forward exercising the modern powers of the presidency. Most of these powers have been created by the Democratic Party over the last 90 years. As a former college lecturer in Government/Political Science, I have watched the gradual accretion of power of the executive branch from the time of Franklin D. Roosevelt until last month’s ascension of the only person who could personify the image of the Strong Man Presidency ... DJT.
The Democrats took four generations to morph the American Constitutional Republic into a Strong Executive system similar to Venezuela, Iran, Turkey, and other dictatorships where holds on political power strive to mimic the principal elements of China, Russia and North Korea.
The Democratic Party has captured some 60 years of the last 90 years of the presidency, Republicans capturing only about 48 years. During Democratic administrations, government’s span of control over the American people has, arguably, expanded a hundred times.
Today, the Democratic Party complains DJT’s power to call the shots is either illegal, illegitimate, immoral, or dictatorial.
Pity. The Democratic Party created these conditions, so they will simply have to live with the consequences of what they have wrought. Perhaps after four years of Trump’s reducing the size and power of the American government, the Democratic Party can have another shot at the presidency.
